Una settimana prima della cerimonia di premiazione degli Emmy 2011, si è tenuta la cerimonia per i Creative Arts Emmy.
I Creative Arts Emmy sono una categoria di premi Emmy per coloro che lavorano dietro le quinte degli spettacoli e non solo, come ad esempio direttori tecnici, costumisti, truccatori, effetti speciali: tutto ciò che in effetti contribuisce a rendere grande uno show.
In questa edizione 2011, la HBO ha fatto incetta di premi, con 15 premi, di cui ben 7 per il solo Boardwalk Empire.
Sul secondo gradino, a parimerito Discovery e History, con 4 premi rispettivamente per Deadliest Catch e Gettysburgh. Seguono con tre premi ognuno Freedom Riders (PBS), Mildred Pierce (HBO), Saturday Night Live (NBC), So You Think You Can Dance (Fox) ed The Kennedys (ReelzChannel).
Non mancano premi per Glee, che ottiene i premi per miglior attrice guest star (Gwyneth Paltrow) e miglior casting per una serie comedy.
Futurama torna a vincere dopo 9 anni di astinenza, con il premio per il miglior programma animato, per l’episodio “The Late Philip J. Fry” .
The Borgias, su Showtime, con Jeremy Irons nei panni di Alessandro VI, riceve due premi: migliori costumi per una serie e miglior musica per sigla originale. Il design per il “titolo” principale viene invece vinto dalla serie campioni di ascolti di HBO: Game of Thrones.
